Dispensary Basics

Legal weed! Yay! Time to visit your local dispensary aka “weed store“, “pot shop,” or “cannabis store.” The different types of dispensaries that exist in the U.S. are recreational dispensaries and medical marijuana dispensaries. These dispensaries are licensed, highly regulated, and are only allowed to operate in states and territories where cannabis has been legalized.

What to Know about Recreational Dispensaries

Recreational marijuana dispensaries, also known as “adult-use dispensaries,” don’t require a medical card to visit; but you must be at least 21 years of age with a valid photo ID, which you will have to show. Dispensaries are regulated by state as well as the THC products they are allowed to sell. Each legal state has their own unique marijuana laws and regulations. For example, some states only allow recreational dispensaries to sell cannabis flower while other states may be allowed to offer a full range of THC products from buds, dabs, carts, and edibles. States may also set strict purchase limits for the amount of recreational weed that can be bought at one time. It’s important to make yourself familiar with your state’s marijuana laws before you decide to visit a recreational dispensary. See Leafly’s legalization guide for more information.

What to Know about Medical Dispensaries

Medical marijuana dispensaries are different from recreational dispensaries because they require you to have a valid medical marijuana card in addition to a valid photo ID card. Medical marijuana may be priced and taxed at a lower rate than recreational cannabis. Medical cannabis patients also may have less restrictions when it comes to how much weed you can purchase and how much THC products can contain.

Frequently asked questions

To visit a recreational dispensary you must bring a valid ID, such as a driver's license or passport, to show proof you are 21 years or older. It is highly recommended to bring cash, as many dispensaries do not allow you to use a credit or debit card. Bringing cash can also help you avoid ATM fees.

Make sure you have your medical marijuana card if visiting a medical dispensary.
There is not an official limit on the amount of dispensaries you can visit in one day. However, the total amount of cannabis that can be bought collectively cannot exceed the legal limit set by the state you’re buying in.
In some states, dispensaries may take a photo of your ID and be required to track how much weed you buy.
