Autoflowering Cannabis is different from most commonly cultivated “photoperiod” type cannabis in that it does not depend on the length of days vs nights to trigger flowering. Photoperiod strains will begin to flower as the days shorten and nights lengthen in the fall or when an indoor grower switches the light to 12 hours on and 12 hours off. Autoflowering strains are indifferent to light cycles and will produce finished and ready to harvest flowers around 2-3 months after seed germination depending on the strain. Autoflowers still require ample light, water, warmth, and nutrient to grow but they do not base flower timing on light hours like photoperiod types. This can be highly advantageous to growers for many reasons including, faster turnaround, no need to alter light cycle artificially through light deprivation, and harvest planning to avoid inclement fall weather. Through many generations of breeding, Humboldt Seed Co has developed their Autoflower strains to have all the redeeming qualities of their popular photoperiod strains. Durban Poison made waves in Humboldt back in the late nineties and a select few legacy cultivators made a point of preserving clones even though the longer flowering time made it less desirable for commercial production. In 2021 they were gifted the original Durban cut and they set out to stabilize it as an autoflower seed line, a process that takes several years and at least four generations of sifting through progeny to keep true to type traits from the original photoperiod version. Fortunately, they kept seed from a minty phenotype of our Mint Jelly Auto, which happens to hold a autoflower world record for THC content, was a great place to start the transition of the Durban Poison into an auto. As expected, the Durban Poison isn’t their quickest auto, taking up to 100 days from sprout to harvest, but the reward in yield, cannabinoid content and terpenes make up for the extra couple weeks. These dense light green, incredibly frosty flowers also happen to be one of their best strains for hash production. Expect a terpene explosion that will take you back in time to simpler days!
