Did you know the popular casino game of “Craps” got its start in New Orleans.

Louisiana also had the first Opera House in the United States.  It was located in the French Quarter on Bourbon Street in New Orleans and was performed for the first time in 1796.

Louisiana is the only state in the union that does not have counties.  They have 65 “parishes” instead.

French was once the dominant language, but only about 3.5% speak it today.

There are no National Parks in Louisiana.  There are 35 State Parks and one State Forest.

The famous criminal couple, Bonnie and Clyde died in Bienville Parish, Louisiana.  There is a Bonnie and Clyde Ambush Museum in Gibsland, Bienville, and was originally run by the son of one of the men who killed the infamous duo during a shootout.

Things to do after you get your medical card in Louisiana:

Louisiana is famous for its Cajun and Creole cuisine, diverse cultural heritage, and jazz music.   Enjoy the world-famous event known as Mardi Gras.  It is a two week celebration where millions people visit the city of New Orleans to participate in parades and celebrations centered on Bourbon Street and primarily in the French Quarter of New Orleans.  Stop in the Cafe du Monde for chicory coffee and beignets for a sweet treat.  Also, be sure to enjoy a piece of the famous “King Cake” during your visit.

Explore the Creole Nature Trail located in Lake Charles, Louisiana.  This includes undeveloped marshlands, wildlife refuges and gulf beaches.   It is also known as the “Louisiana Outback”.
The Creole Nature Trail is a 180 mile scenic byway that you can enjoy from the comfort of your automobile.  If you are more adventuresome, stop at the Sabine Natural Wildlife Refuge and meander down the Wetland Walkway, or take a walk down one of the gulf beaches along your journey.

Located in Shreveport is the R.W. Norton Art Gallery.  This is a great location for art lovers and the museum features works of art by European and American artists.  If hold more than 400 paintings along with sculptures and tapestries.  Surrounding the museum is 40 acres of beautiful botanical gardens.  Best of all, admission is FREE!

Take a hike at the Louisiana State Arboretum.  Located in Ville Platte within Chicot State Park, the Arboretum provides easy walking trails.  Drop in the visitor center to learn about the flora and fauna you will be seeing before you head out on your hike.  The trail leads through greenery, goes over wetlands and under sycamores.  A must for nature lovers and anyone who loves hiking and being outdoors.

The Louisiana Art and Science Museum is located in Baton Rouge in a historic railroad depot right on the Mississippi River.  Go back in time as you walk thru the Ancient Egypt Gallery.  There are galleries exploring the solar system and universe.  Included is the Irene W. Pennington Planetarium which is the “star” attraction at the museum and features sky shows and movies.  Here you will learn about the night sky and celestial events all under a 60 foot dome.
